Match preview

One of European football’s heavyweight sides could see themselves sent packing from the top tier of European club football on Tuesday, October 25th.

This comes as a Juventus outfit scrapping for their Champions League lives prepare for a do-or-die showdown with Benfica.

The Bianconeri, of course, have endured a campaign to forget thus far, not only on the continent, but domestically, too.

Massimiliano Allegri’s troops already sit a full ten points off the pace set by rampant table-toppers Napoli, amid efforts to reclaim the club’s Scudetto crown.

Signs of encouragement, though, have followed over the course of the last two weeks.

After first triumphing in the latest edition of The Derby della Mole, the Old Lady ran riot against Empoli at the weekend, to the tune of four goals without reply.

Juventus will therefore be hopeful of carrying such momentum into the exchanges in Lisbon on Tuesday night.

Benfica, however, will prove a tough nut to crack.

After carving out a path to the competition’s quarter-finals in 2021/22, the Portuguese powerhouse have since continued to impress this time round.

All told, Roger Schmidt’s troops have racked up two wins and two draws across their four Champions League outings to date, leaving them joint-top of the Group H table, alongside Paris Saint-Germain.

One of the victories in question, meanwhile, came at the expense of their upcoming opponents, courtesy of a 2-1 triumph in Turin in September.

Not only that, but Benfica are too fresh off a stellar result this past weekend, when a trip to fierce rivals Porto gave rise to a hard-fought three-point haul.

As such, despite their desperation for three points, it appears unlikely that a Juventus outfit sans the services of all of Angel Di Maria, Paul Pogba and Federico Chiesa will have what it takes to depart Lisbon with all three points on Tuesday.

Instead, a stalemate, or perhaps even a Benfica win, look the safer bets at present.
