Match preview

1st in the Israeli Premier League meets the table-toppers in Portugal as Maccabi Haifa look to go out with a bang in the Champions League by beating Benfica with the club eyeing up a spot above Juventus in the group.

It’s been a bizarre season in the Champions League for the Israeli giants, as they have managed to defeat the Serie A side, while also leading against Paris Saint-Germain on home soil for the majority of the game, before Lionel Messi stole all three points. The club were also smashed by Messi and co. 7-2 in the last round of fixtures, but with Juventus losing to Benfica at the same time, Haifa have a chance to head into the Europa League.

Both sides are on three points so far in Group H, meaning Haifa may just need a point in this game if PSG can beat Juventus. At the same time, however, Benfica know a win could rocket them to the top of the group, as long as PSG drop points.

In fact the Primeria Liga leaders are unbeaten across both the Champions League and the domestic front, winning a stunning 10 of the 11 games so far in the league, scoring 29 times and letting in an incredible record of just five goals.

Haifa managed to return to winning ways themselves in the league over the weekend, beating Ashdod 3-1. Benfica will be confident in winning this game, however, as they managed to beat Juventus 4-3 last week in the Champions League.
