Union Berlin are eyeing up first place in the Bundesliga for the first time ever at this stage in the history of the competition as the men from the capital sit just two points behind Bayern Munich before a meeting with Schalke.
Schalke are bottom of the table for yet another week and they will be hoping to be the team to prevent Union reaching the top of the league. On paper, and at home, Union would be embarrassed with anything but a convincing win.
The second-placed side did draw 0-0 with Ajax in midweek, although they will now be favoured to advance through the Europa League play-offs with the Dutch champions heading to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei next week.
Urs Fischer’s Union will need to win if they want to reach the summit of German football, but Schalke will remain last regardless of anything. The 18th-placed side are four behind 17th Stuttgart and seven behind Bochum in the safe spots of the Bundesliga.
Union also got a sensational win against RB Leipzig last week in what was arguably their best result of the season. Robin Knoche netted from the spot, as Janik Haberer also scored.
