Match preview
Ahead of a meeting in the Berlin derby and another clash with Wolfsburg in the DFB-Pokal round of 16, Union Berlin will meet with Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga after two contrasting results in the returning week of Bundesliga action.
Union are up into third after their excellent victory over Hoffenheim that saw the club come from behind to win 3-1 after three goals in the last 24 minutes of the game. Danilho Doekhi scored twice in that game, as Jamie Leweling scored in the 96th minute.
Union have moved ahead of Freiburg and into third only on goals difference because of the latter’s stunning 6-0 loss to Wolfsburg.
Urs Fischer’s men now head into this one with nine wins in the league, which is just one less than league leaders Bayern Munich. In fact, they remain just five points behind Bayern in the table.
As for Bremen, they are in the top 10 despite a 7-1 mauling from Koln. Niclas Fullkrug scored in the first half that day, but Bremen were already 4-0 down by that stage in the game.
