Match Preview

A full season under Chris Wilder was supposed to be the answer to getting out of the Championship for Middlesbrough, but the former Sheffield United manager has found it hard going so far this season, with just two wins from nine so far, seeing his side drop as far as 21st following a humbling at home to Cardiff on Tuesday – which actually saw them go 3-0 down in the first half before pulling back to 3-2.

One positive is that Manchester City loanee Zack Steffan is set to return for the first time in four matches following an injury, but Chuba Akpom and Darragh Lenihan remain two big absentees.

If things have been bad for Boro, Paul Warne will be delighted by Rotherham’s progress so far this season with 13 points from eight matches, to see them just a point outside the top six as they aim to finally nail down a spot in the second tier.

The fact they had into the tie as favourites is a sign of the fortunes of two sides expected to be at opposite ends of the table come the end of the season. Richard Wood has been an unexpected rich source of goals from defence so far, with four goals to his name in the league.
