Match preview

In-spite of the ongoing Russian invasion of their homeland, Shakhtar Donetsk’s remarkable European adventure continues.

First, in the Champions League group stages, Igor Jovićević’s team smashed RB Leipzig 4-1 away, before managing draws against Celtic and then Real Madrid.

This saw the Ukrainian giants drop into the Europa League, where they managed to oust Stade Rennais on penalties, after both legs ended 2-1.

A total of 14 penalties were taken at Roazhon Park, with Kevin Kelsy’s calm spot-kick enough to see Shakhtar advance 5-4, sparking wild celebrations.

Domestically, the Ukrainian Premier League got up and running again last month, with Shakhtar demolishing Metalist Kharkiv 7-0 on Sunday.

Of course, Shakhtar won this competition in 2009, also reaching the last four in 2016 and 2020.

Feyenoord meanwhile topped their group in November, despite the fact all four clubs ended up on eight points.

Arne Slot’s team prevailed on goals scored, thanks largely to a 6-0 drubbing of Sturm Graz on matchday two.

Thus, last season’s Europa Conference League finalists are aiming to reach the last eight of this tournament for the first time in 21 years, actually lifting the trophy back then.

In the Eredivisie, Feyenoord are three points clear at the top, thanks to Saturday’s 1-0 win over Groningen, with Oussama Idrissi scoring a last-gasp winner.

De club aan de Maas are desperate to claim their first league title in six years, but would also love a deep run in this competition too.

Expect goals in this first leg at Stadion Wojska Polskiego in Warsaw.

Shakhtar Donetsk team news

Lassina Traoré and Oleksandr Zubkov were amongst the scorers at the weekend, and will be Shakhtar’s main men for goals, after Mykhailo Mudryk was sold to Chelsea.

Mykola Matvienko is still injured, which is a blow, so Yaroslav Rakitskyi will continue to partner Valeriy Bondar at centre-back.

Feyenoord team news

First choice goalkeeper Justin Bijlow is out long-term, so Timon Wellenreuther will continue to deputise.

Orkun Kökcü will continue to anchor midfield, with Alireza Jahanbakhsh and weekend hero Oussama Idrissi flanking Santiago Gimenez in attack.
