Match preview

Will Slavia Prague enjoy another memorable European adventure?

In both 2019 and 2021, the Red and Whites got all the way to the Europa League quarter-finals, eventually bowing out to Chelsea and Arsenal respectively.

This year’s continental adventure began catastrophically, losing to Ferencváros in Champions League qualifying and Legia Warszawa in the Europa League play-offs.

Then, despite only accumulating eight points, Slavia snuck into second in Europa Conference League Group E, thanks to a matchday six draw with Union Berlin.

However, Jindřich Trpišovský’s side managed to turn on the style in the first knockout round, demolishing Fenerbahçe 6-4 over two legs.

Slavia won both legs 3-2, first in İstanbul and then at home, with five different players on target.

The Slavists will also be buoyant after a 2-0 Prague derby victory over Sparta on Sunday; Ondřej Lingr and Ivan Schranz the scorers.

This leaves them joint-top of the Czech First League, level with Viktoria Plzeň, aiming to win a fourth consecutive title.

Will Slavia Praha maintain their unbeaten home European record this season?

LASK meanwhile are relative newcomers to the European scene, making their group stage debut as recently as 2019.

That season, they actually got all the way to the round of 16, beating AZ before losing to Manchester United.

This year, die Schwarz-Weißen began in the third qualifying round, overcoming Vojvodina and St Johnstone to reach a third group stage in as many seasons.

Once there, LASK cruised to top spot, amassing 16 points out of 18, against Maccabi Tel Aviv, HJK and Alashkert.

This means they’ve now lost just four of their last 26 European games, only suffering defeat to Man United, Tottenham and Antwerp in this period.

LASK’s only league title was won back in 1965 and, right now, they’re down in eighth in the Austrian Bundesliga, losing 1-0 at Wolfsberger AC on Sunday.

As a result, Andreas Wieland’s side are unlikely to be in Europe next season, but fancy their chances of extending this season’s escapade.

Will LASK get a result against the Czech champions at Sinobo Stadium?

Slavia Prague team news

Slavia are missing two key players due to suspension: central-defender Taras Kacharaba and left-back Oscar Dorley.

Fellow full-backs Jan Bořil and Alexander Bah are also injured, as is winger Lukáš Provod.

With David Jurásek, who started at the weekend, not in the UEFA squad, it remains to be seen who will be used on the left side of the back four.

They do have a solid midfield pairing of Ibrahim Traoré and Tomáš Holeš, the latter scored for the Czechs at last summer’s European Championships.

Peter Olayinka will captain the side and, along with Yira Sor and Ondřej Lingr, will lead the attack.

Fellow striker Michael Krmenčík hasn’t played for over a month due to injury.

LASK team news

The visitors do not have anyone suspended, nor any players one booking away from missing the second leg.

What they do have is a shortage of centre-backs with Petar Filipović, Oumar Sako and Strahinja Kerkez all currently out.

Philipp Wiesinger is the guaranteed starter at the heart of defence; Jan Boller got the nod on Sunday but Yannis Letard or Felix Luckeneder are alternatives.

Alexander Schmidt led the line at the weekend but Marko Raguž is likely to come in here.

Raguž has scored 11 goals in 22 appearances in UEFA competition for LASK, but this season has been blighted by a groin injury.
