Match preview
Tranmere Rovers and Crawley Town are languishing down in the bottom half of the table ahead of a meeting between the two at Prenton Park with six points the difference between them.
In reality, if Crawley are going to give themselves a chance of getting into the top half of the table in the next few weeks, they have to win here. In fact, despite only three places keeping them apart, six points does too, as well the fact that Crawley have let in an alarming 32 goals from 21 games, just as Tranmere have conceded only 18.
Micky Mellon’s men, however, are looking much worse this time around than they did last season. Tranmere continue to be one of the best defensive sides in the league, but with them also managing to score just 20 goals from 21 games, they are one of the lowest-scoring sides in the division too. Mellon’s men have also won less (7) than they have drawn (8).
Crawley lost to Hartlepool United last time out, which saw them move off the bottom of the table away from home. Not just was losing to the then-bottom of the table, but by beating Swindon Town in eighth a week prior, it shows how inconsistent they have been.
Tranmere, however, have not won a game since beating Crewe Alexandra in the Football League Trophy back in mid-October. Two losses in two different competitions to Carlisle United has since come in, while they also lost to Wimbledon and Grimsby Town.
