Match preview

Two former FA Cup winners go head-to-head in South Wales, but who’s cup campaign will be over before it ever really began?

Leeds United are currently enjoying a third successive season back in the Premier League, but continue to battle against relegation.

On Wednesday night, Jesse Marsch’s team played out a thoroughly entertaining 2-2 draw with West Ham, in which Wilfried Gnonto and Rodrigo were on target.

The Whites are now winless in four Premier League matches, only claiming victory in two of their last 14, form that means they’re 14th, just two points clear of danger.

Despite a goalless draw at St James’ on New Year’s Eve, Leeds’ last seven outings have produced a ridiculous 30 goals; that’s five goals a game, if the Newcastle game is excluded!

So, can Cardiff City knock out top-flight opposition in this tie?

In fact, right now, Mark Hudson’s men are just two points and two places clear of the Championship’s relegation zone, following a 1-0 defeat at Blackburn on New Year’s Day.

This means Cardiff are winless in seven, only victorious twice since 8 October.

The Welsh club have exited the FA Cup in the third round in five of the last seven seasons, with a repeat of that likely at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff City team news

Callum Robinson is Cardiff’s top-scorer this season with just four goals, emphasising their lack of goal-threat.

So, if the Bluebirds are going to cause an upset here, centre-back duo Cédric Kipré and Perry Ng will need to be on top form.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Allsop; Sang, Ng, Kipré, Simpson; Ralls, Wintle, Whyte, O’Dowda, Robinson; Harris.

Leeds United team news

Centre-back Maximilian Wöber could be in line for his debut after arriving from RB Salzburg.

Mateusz Klich meanwhile made his 195th and last appearance for Leeds on Wednesday; he’s heading off to America to join D.C. United.

Wilfried Gnonto scored his first goal for Leeds in mid-week, while Crysencio Summerville netting in four successive matches just before the break.

Illan Meslier, Luke Ayling, Liam Cooper and Jack Harrison all started when Leeds last visited Cardiff in June 2020.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Meslier; Kristensen, Koch, Cooper, Struijk; Adams, Roca, Aaronson, Summerville, Gnonto; Rodrigo.
