Midtjylland vs Celtic: Match preview

After a highly-eventful first leg in Glasgow, there is nothing to separate these two sides.

Last Tuesday, in the first half, it was all Celtic with Ryan Christie hitting the post before missing the target with a header just seconds after.

The Celts did eventually make the breakthrough in the 39th minute when Christie’s shot was parried by Jonas Lössl but Liel Abada was there to smash home the rebound.

The teenaged winger scoring on his Hoops debut.

Just when it looked like Celtic were going to run away with it, the first big flashpoint of the match took place.

Anders Dreyer raced into the Celts’ box, went down and was booked for simulation.

Despite getting the decision from referee Sandro Schärer, centre-back Nir Bitton was not happy and was sent off for shoving his index finger in Dreyer’s face.

A very stupid thing to do from an experienced centre-back.

But then, early in the second half, it was 10V10 as Dreyer was sent off for Midtjylland, receiving a second yellow, also for diving! Extraordinary.

The home side then went very close to doubling their lead, twice; Callum McGregor hitting the crossbar before Odsonne Édouard raced through but his tame effort was saved.

Evander then went close, with the visitor’s first shot in anger, before the Brazilian did provide an equaliser in the 66th minute.

His free-kick beat everybody with Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas pulling his arms away, misjudging the ball’s trajectory horribly.

So 1-1 it finished at Parkhead; it’s all to play for in Herning.

FC Midtjylland were only formed in 1999 but won the Superligaen title in 2015, 2018 and 2020, finishing second last season, one point behind Brøndby.

In Europe, they’ve reached two group stages, the Europa League in 2015 and the Champions League last season.

Overall in UEFA competitions, they’ve lost five of their last 20 home games.

Liverpool, Atalanta, Rangers, Malmö and Osmanlıspor the teams who’ve beaten them on home soil since October 2015.

Will the Danish side advance to the third qualifying round with a victory here?

Will Celtic win away?

As for Celtic, expectations were incredibly low going into the first leg due to the club’s turbulent summer.

The first leg was Ange Postecoglou’s first competitive game in charge but the pre-season friendlies either side haven’t gone to plan.

11 days ago, Preston North End won a friendly at Celtic Park 1-0 and, on Saturday, they were demolished 6-2 by West Ham United in a worrying display.

But this is understandable.

As well as new Manager, Celtic have a new Chief Executive, Dominic McKay, but not too many new players with recruitment proving challenging.

Nevertheless, European football is, and always will be, hugely significant to Celtic.

They’ve failed in Champions League qualifying in each of the last three seasons, falling in round three to AEK Athens and Cluj before crashing out at this stage last year to Ferencváros.

The Hoops have had some kind of group stage football every season since 2010/11 and that is the minimum expectations again.

This second qualifying round tie is key because, at the very least, if Celtic win they’ll be in the Europa League group phase.

The winners of this tie will surely play PSV Eindhoven after they beat Galatasaray 5-1 in their first leg.

If they lose in Denmark, the Bhoys drop into Europa League Q3 and play Czech side FK Jablonec.

The Scottish Premiership season commences on Saturday; Celtic face Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle.

But, before then, they face a huge game so will it be a famous European night for Celtic at MCH Arena?

Midtjylland team news vs Celtic

Midtjylland should have the physical advantage over their opposition as they are two matches into the Superligaen season.

On the opening day, they suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat to Odense Boldklub but bounced back, beating AaB Fodbold on Saturday evening.

Júnior Brumado with the only goal in the latter.

Will this make the difference for Bo Henriksen’s side?

Well, he can call upon experienced goalkeeper Jonas Lössl who rejoined the club from Everton in February.

Henriksen opted for a 4-3-3 for their first two games of the season, including the first leg, before switching to a 3-4-3 at the weekend.

It’ll be interesting to see which system he goes for here.

Centre-back Juninho made his debut for the club on Saturday, after joining from Palmeiras, but is ineligible for this second leg.

So, Daniel Høegh will line-up alongside club captain Erik Sviatchenko, formally of Celtic.

With Frank Onyeka having joined Brentford, Raphael Onyedika will anchor the midfield with danger man Evander further forward.

Anders Dreyer is suspended after his red card at Parkhead so Awer Mabil is likely to come into the XI on the right-wing.

He was born in a Kenyan refugee camp before emigrating to Australia, so far winning 16 caps for the Socceroos.

Pione Sisto and Júnior Brumado will make up the front three.

Sory Kaba is unlikely to feature as he’s currently on strike, attempting to force a move away.

Will Midtjylland win at home?

Celtic team news vs Midtjylland

As for Celtic, they make the journey to Herning very short of options.

Despite his error in the first game, Vasilis Barkas is likely to keep his place in goal, ahead of Scott Bain.

Ange Postecoglou is particularly short of defensive options.

Nir Bitton can’t play, he’s suspended, neither can the club’s newest recruit Carl Starfelt.

The Swedish international centre-back has joined from Rubin Kazan but is ineligible having done so after the UEFA deadline.

So, as was the case after Bitton’s dismissal, 18 year old Dane Murray will partner 21 year old Stephen Welsh at centre-back.

Either side will once again be Anthony Ralston, he’s 22, with Greg Taylor the experienced head at the back at 23.

Further forward, Ismaila Soro, club captain Callum McGregor and David Turnbull is a strong trio.

Out-wide, Ryan Christie is likely to keep his place; he was excellent in the first leg despite seemingly wanting to leave the club.

Liel Abada will be on the flank after impressing on his debut, in which he scored, after joining from Maccabi Petah Tikva just a few weeks ago.

Fellow new-recruit, Kyogo Furuhashi, is yet to arrive in Scotland after joining from Vissel Kobe of the J.League.

Odsonne Édouard will lead the line, despite also wanting-away, as he’s of vastly superior quality to Albian Ajeti or Leigh Griffiths.

Will this be a famous night in Celtic’s European history?
