Match preview

France come into the international break on the back of a 16-match unbeaten run (in normal time) that extended the duration of the 2021 calendar year despite being unexpectedly ousted at Euro 2020 by Switzerland in a penalty shootout in the Round of 16 but bounce back with a Nations League finals win over Spain.

Much of the attacking onus could once again fall on Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann, and the returning Olivier Giroud as the trio has combined for over 100 international goals between them, but Ivory Coast could present an interesting opponent on the day given their own attacking talent seen throughout the team under Patrice Beaumelle.

Les Éléphants has endured a difficult last four months under the Frenchman, first failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after finishing second in their group behind Cameroon, before being dumped out of AFCON 2021 in the Round of 16 by eventual finalists Egypt. On paper, there is plenty of talent in this Ivory Coast side headlined by familiar figures the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Sébastien Haller, Franck Kessié, Jérémie Boga, Nicolas Pépé, Serge Aurier, and Maxwel Cornet, but a real lack of consistent goal threat throughout the team puts them at a slight disadvantage despite the wealth of individual ability they do possess. France is the heavy favorite and for good reason but Ivory Coast are still capable of giving a good account of themselves.

France team news

France boss Didier Deschamps once comes into the international break with a squad glistening with talent as Les Bleus are set to clash with Ivory Coast in Marseille, but was made to part ways with both Benjamin Pavard (Covid) and N’Golo Kanté (personal reasons).

Karim Benzema is also absent from the squad due to injury but that signaled a return for Olivier Giroud, while a trio of potential debutants could be called upon through RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku, Marseille’s (on loan from Arsenal) William Saliba, and RC Lens’ Jonathan Clauss. Overall, there are no serious concerns.

Ivory Coast team news

Patrice Beaumelle will look to press the reset button for Ivory Coast after Les Éléphants only managed to reach the round of 16 in this year’s African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, but will still count on the same core of European-based stars.

Serie A-based pair Hamed Traore and Wilfried Singo will not feature however after both had to pull out of the squad due to injury which could be viewed as a bit of a blow for Beaumelle, but the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Nicolas Pépé, Sébastien Haller, Max Gradel, Franck Kessié, and Maxwel Cornet are all in the squad.
