Match preview

Will 1968 League Cup winners Leeds United avoid a second round exit in this tasty Yorkshire derby?

On Sunday, the Whites continued their unbeaten start to the season by hammering Chelsea 3-0 at Elland Road.

Brenden Aaronson breaking the deadlock, robbing the goalkeeper and then tapping home from a picometer out, before Rodrigo’s header and Jack Harrison’s unconventional volley secured the points.

So, Jesse Marsch’s side now have seven points on the board, having already beaten Wolves and then drawn with Southampton.

In League Cup terms through, Leeds’ recent record is terrible, winning just two of their last seven matches in this competition.

So, this should give Barnsley hope as they make the short 19.3 mile journey north.

Their attempt at an instant return isn’t going to plan, with Michael Duff’s team 16th in the third-tier, hammered 3-0 by Wycombe on Saturday.

In the last round, Barnsley did beat Middlesbrough at the Riverside, thanks to Josh Benson’s last-gasp winner.

This though will be a far tougher assignment, with Leeds big favourites to get through.
