Match preview

Carabao Cup holders Liverpool begin the defence of their trophy.

Back in February, the Reds beat Chelsea 11-10 on penalties at Wembley, thereby lifting this cup for the ninth time, extending their own record.

Jürgen Klopp’s side almost won the quadruple last season, also picking up the FA Cup, but this campaign isn’t going quite as well.

The Reds currently find themselves eighth in the Premier League, despite Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Spurs.

Mohamed Salah bagging a first half brace at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as Liverpool won an away league game for the first time this season.

In this competition, the Reds haven’t fallen to lower-league opposition since 2010, hoping that fact is still true come 10 o’clock on Wednesday.

Given that the Rams are competing in the third-tier for the first time since 1986, and were in administration over the summer, this big pay-day is much-needed.

Paul Warne’s team are currently seventh in League One, and were held to a 2-2 draw by Torquay United in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Just over 4,000 people watched that one at Plainmoor, with significantly more set to be present at Anfield here.

The vast majority will be hoping to see a comfortable Liverpool victory, with this the most likely outcome.
