Match preview

Lens and Toulouse will kick off Ligue 1 this weekend on Friday night as one of Europe’s surprise packages plays hosts to a side that have only just moved into the top half of the table in France’s top flight.

It’s been a stunning campaign for Lens so far in 2022/23, and they are easily the closest rivals to Paris Saint-Germain’s title this season in Ligue 1 with only a five-point gap on the league leaders. The club are now on a two-game win run as well, following on from a narrow defeat to Lille back at the start of October. Lens would go on to edge past Montpellier 1-0 and then defeat Marseille 1-0 away from home in a clinical display.

In fact, with eight games won and only one defeat in the league, they are sitting ahead of Lorient by goals difference, based on the fact they have let in just eight goals in 12 games. At the same time, the loss to Lille at the start of the month was their only dropped points in October, and you have to date back to September 18 to see their last 0-0 draw with Nantes.

As for Toulouse, they are up into 10th now after an unbeaten run in October. This has seen them beat Montpellier 4-2, Angers 3-2, and draw with Lyon and Strasbourg too. Against Lens, however, they are set to struggle against one of the league’s best defensives.
