Match preview

These two clubs met as recently as Sunday in the Premier League, with Aston Villa hoping for the same outcome here.

That game was Unai Emery’s first game in charge, and to say he made a promising start would be an understatement.

Villa led 2-0 after just 11 minutes, Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne on target, the latter a gorgeous free-kick, before Jacob Ramsey fired home a third.

That made it back-to-back home wins for the Claret and Blue Army; all four of their league wins have come at Villa Park.

In the previous round, back in August, Douglas Luiz scored directly from a corner, Danny Ings, Digne and Bailey also on target, in a 4-1 victory over Bolton.

Now led by Emery, who’s won three of his last six meetings with Manchester United, can Villa cause a bit of an upset.

Last Thursday, the Red Devils missed out on top spot in their Europa League group, despite beating Real Sociedad 1-0.

This could prove costly because, on Monday, they were drawn against Barcelona in the first knockout round draw.

As mentioned, Erik ten Hag’s team were demolished at Villa Park on Sunday, ending their five-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League.

So, in their penultimate game before the World Cup break, ten Hag will be desperate to avoid falling at the League Cup’s first hurdle.

Can Aston Villa win at Old Trafford in successive years for the first time since 1920, or will Man United reach round four?
