It’s the Choc des Olympiques this weekend in the standout fixture of Ligue 1 this Sunday as Marseille and Lyon do battle at the Stade Velodrome off the back of heartbreak in the Champions League for the home side after a defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
At one stage in the first half, Marseille were heading into the knockout rounds of the competition with a goal from Chancel Memba thanks to his thumping header past Hugo Lloris. However, with Clement Lenglet equalising and a winner from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Spurs ran out 2-1 winners and forced Marseille to the bottom of the table.
In Ligue 1, however, the French giants remain in fifth despite a downfall in form that puts them 11 points behind the champions and league leaders, Paris Saint-Germain.
Worse yet for Marseille, the loss to Spurs has extended their winless run in all competitions to five ever since beating Sporting Lisbon in mid-October. The club narrowly lost to rivals PSG, before then losing to second-placed Lens which all but killed their title hopes early on. A 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in Europe was coupled with a 2-2 draw away to Strasbourg and that loss to Spurs.
Lyon are in dire straits still, compared to their usual standards, with them in eighth and only six wins on the board. In fact, they remain four points behind rivals Marseille, and they must win here to have any hope of getting into fifth before the World Cup break, as fourth is mathematically impossible to reach in two games.
