Match preview
A Sunderland outfit in the thick of a fine stretch of form will be hopeful of carrying their recent excellence into the FA Cup on Saturday, January 7th.
This comes as the Black Cats prepare to make the trip to New Meadow, for a meeting with League One strugglers Shrewsbury Town.
After previously finding themselves at the heart of the battle against relegation from the Championship earlier in the campaign, recent weeks, of course, have seen Sunderland enjoy a surge up the table in England’s 2nd tier.
All told, dating back to early November, Tony Mowbray’s men have slipped to just a solitary defeat from seven outings.
Such stellar endeavours have culminated in the Black Cats not only climbing away from the bottom three, but finding themselves with a legitimate shot at clinching a promotion playoff berth.

After being sent packing from the FA Cup in embarrassing fashion at the hands of Mansfield in last season’s edition of the tournament, Sunderland, in turn, will no doubt be confident in their chances of enjoying an altogether more fruitful go of things this time round.
The Shrews have endured a notably tougher time of things of late, en route to defeat in each of the club’s last three fixtures.
The most recent, this past weekend, proved of particular concern – a red card for the third game in succession culminated in Steve Cotterill’s men being condemned to a three-goal defeat at the hands of Fleetwood.
They have, as a result, been dragged to 16th in the League One standings.
And we at 101 do not envision Shrewsbury’s fortunes improving all that much on Saturday, either, instead backing visitors Sunderland to emerge from New Meadow on the right side of the result.
