Match preview

Türkiye have been flawless in the UEFA Nations League so far this year, looking to wrap up promotion.

During June’s four-game window, the Crescent-Stars won all their matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding none.

Serdar Dursun is the leading scorer in League C with four, including a brace during the 6-0 drubbing of Lithuania in Vilnius, Türkiye’s joint-biggest away win of all time.

So, Stefan Kuntz’s team are five points clear at the top of the group, needing just a draw in İstanbul to secure promotion.

Before this, it has been two of years of disappointment for Türkiye.

They were relegated from League B in 2020, then slumped out of the Euros pointless, the only side to do this, before losing to Portugal in the World Cup play-offs back in March.

The only side who can catch the run-away group leaders are Luxembourg, but this seems highly improbable now.

The Red Lions began by beating both Lithuania and Faroe Islands on the road, before Türkiye left Stade de Luxembourg 2-0 winners on matchday three.

In their last outing, Gerson Rodrigues and Leandro Barreiro had their side two goals up at home to the Faroes, only for an unlikely comeback saw the points shared.

While they’ll almost certainly miss out on promotion, Luc Holtz’s team have undoubtedly made giant strides forward in recent months.

During World Cup 2022 qualifying, Luxembourg beat Azerbaijan twice and Ireland in Dublin, making that their most productive qualification campaign ever, in terms of point per game.

Les Lions Rouges, once whipping boys, are now a competitive outfit.

Here though, the hosts may well be just too strong at Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadyumu.
