United States vs Jamaica match preview
The United States kick off the defence of their CONCACAF Gold Cup title, seeking to remain the undisputed kings of the region.
Last weekend, the U.S. retained their Nations League title in Las Vegas, beating fierce rivals Mexico tres a cero in the semis before a 2-0 victory over Canada in the final at Allegiant Stadium.
This means, for the first time ever, USA have won three successive CONCACAF trophies, emphasising their recent dominance.
Now, with B. J. Callaghan still in interim charge, despite the fact Gregg Berhalter has been rehired, the Stars and Stripes are going in search of yet more silverware.
This roster is largely made up of MLS-based players, with just five of the 23 plying their trade in Europe.
So, the U.S. are, as always, amongst the favourites to go all the way in this competition, although this opener in Chicago certainly won’t be easy.
Jamaica have strong recent pedigree at the Gold Cup, reaching back-to-back finals in 2015 and 2017, with their last three campaigns at this tournament all ended by the United States.
Two summers ago, the Reggae Boyz fell at the quarter-final hurdle, dumped out by Matthew Hoppe’s late header at AT&T Stadium.
Since then, the JFF have continued to recruit dual-nationals, as their push to get Jamaica to just their second World Cup, after France ‘98, ramps up.
Heimir Hallgrímsson’s squad for this competition is looking very strong, and Jamaican supporters are encouraged by their team’s 2-2 draw at the Azteca with Mexico in their last competitive outing in March.
With Trinidad & Tobago and St Kitts & Nevis completing the Group A line-up, these two are overwhelming favourites to reach the knockout phase, but taking top spot could be invaluable.
So, can Jamaica beat USA for the first time since the Gold Cup semi of 2015, or will the hosts make a winning start in front of a big crowd at Soldier Field?
United States team news
As mentioned, after their exploits at the Nations League Finals, almost all of USA’s big stars are not here.
So, don’t expect to see Sergiño Dest, Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, Christian Pulisic, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna, Brenden Aaronson, Ricardo Pepi or Folarin Balogun.
Matt Turner is in this squad though, so will start in goal, having conceded just one goal in six Gold Cup appearances two summers ago, this coming in a 6-1 victory over Martinique.
Centre-back Miles Robinson is the other player who was in action in Las Vegas who’s also in this squad.
He started the win over Mexico before sitting out the final due to a slight knock, but will start here if fit.
Đorđe Mihailović struggled to make an impact after joining AZ in January, so is hoping to showcase his skills at this tournament.
Fellow midfielders Alan Soñora and Alejandro Zendejas both declared for the U.S. earlier this year, with the Liga MX duo set to start here.
At centre-forward, B. J. Callaghan has a tough decision to make, given that Brandon Vázquez and Jesús Ferreira have both been in excellent form in MLS in 2023.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Turner; Reynolds, Robinson, Miazga, Tolkin; Sands, Soñora, Mihailović; Zendejas, Ferreira, Cowell.
Jamaica team news
Jamaica can showcase their ‘new signing’ in this opener, with FIFA approving Demarai Gray’s one-time switch from England just in time for this tournament.
He, Leon Bailey, Bobby Decordova-Reid and Michail Antonio all ply their trade in the Premier League, so could form a formidable attacking quartet.
Antonio has scored three goals in just six caps so far, including a rocket against USA during World Cup qualifying in Kingston when these two nations last met.
Other familiar faces to British football fans are defenders Amari’i Bell (Luton), Ethan Pinnock (Brentford) and Swansea’s Joel Latibeaudiere, who made his international debut against Qatar earlier this month.
This’ll be goalkeeper Andre Blake’s fifth Gold Cup campaign, reaching two finals, so will he finally get his hands on the trophy?
Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Blake; Latibeaudiere, Pinnock, Lowe, Bell; Lambert, Johnson, Bailey, Decordova-Reid, Gray; Antonio.
