The Premier League campaign drew to a close on Sunday, May 28.
Manchester City were once again crowned Premier League champions after a close-run race with Arsenal.
Elsewhere, Newcastle made a shock appearance in the top-four, whilst Brighton have secured European football for the first time.
Here is 101GreatGoals Premier League Team of the Season.
GK: Nick Pope
David de Gea ended 2022/23 with the Golden Glove following his 17 clean sheets for Manchester United, whilst Aaron Ramsdale also had a stellar campaign, barring a few errors towards the back end of the season. However, Nick Pope, who helped Newcastle keep the joint-best defence in the Premier League, was largely faultless and just about takes it.
Kyle Walker was once again a solid option for Manchester City. Ben White, playing out of position, also had a good campaign with Arsenal. Overall, though, Kieran Trippier’s attacking and defensive output in one of Newcastle’s best-ever campaigns gets him over the line.
CB: William Saliba
Had William Saliba not picked up an injury, there is a good chance we could have seen Arsenal lift the Premier League title. The Frenchman was a rock at the back and his loss greatly impacted Arsenal. Saliba missed Arsenal’s final 11 games of the league season. In that time, the Gunners failed to win six matches. In contrast, Arsenal only failed to win six matches in the previous 27 games Saliba played in.
CB: Ruben Dias
Dias only played 26 Premier League games this season due to a combination of injury and falling out of Pep Guardiola’s favour. However, he returned to the City XI after a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in early February and has been faultless since then, making some huge tackles and interceptions, which likely won City several games.
LB: Nathan Ake
Ake started the campaign in his natural centre-back role and impressed in the opening stages of the season before picking up an injury. He was then thrust into the left-back role following Joao Cancelo’s exit and went on to dominate every winger he faced. Oleksandr Zinchenko was a close second for this spot but his form fell away in the last few months.
CDM: Rodri
In the first half of 2022/23, a case could have been made that Casemiro deserves this spot. However, the Brazilian picked up far too many suspensions and his form dipped on his return. Rodri, meanwhile, has been consistently superb throughout the entire campaign.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne
Whilst not his best-ever, 2022/23 was still another superb season for Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian remains the best attacking midfielder in the world, with his 16 assists four more than any other player in the prem.
CM: Martin Odegaard
Compared to De Bruyne early in the season, Odegaard was a leader on and off the pitch for Arsenal, with his creativity crucial to Arsenal’s success. The Norwegian ended the season with 15 goals and seven assists.
RW: Mohamed Salah
A case could be made that Bukayo Saka should take this spot, and with his 14 goals and 11 assists, it is easy to see why Arsenal fans want him here. However, Saka’s form declined somewhat after Gabriel Jesus returned from injury. Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, scored 19 goals and provided 12 assists in a Liverpool side who were far from their best for large periods.
ST: Erling Haaland
There was never going to be anyone else in this spot. Erling Haaland netted a record-breaking 36 Premier League goals, which is a tally unlikely to be ever broken. The Norwegian also assisted eight times in the league, which is not bad for a striker many accused of being one-dimensional.
LW: Harry Kane
Obviously, Harry Kane is not a winger and in a normal season, someone scoring 30 league goals would be a massive talking point. However, Kane just happened to have his joint-best goalscoring campaign in the same year Erling Haaland took England by storm.
