Arsenal have had some midfield issues in recent weeks that threatened to derail their superb start to the 2022/23 season.

Both Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey were out injured, leaving Arsenal without a natural defensive midfielder.

Partey has since returned, but Elneny may be out for a while, leaving Arsenal facing a jampacked schedule with just one DM, who is fairly injury-prone anyway.

Albert Sambi Lokonga did step up to partner Granit Xhaka in the double pivot vs Aston Villa and was decent, but he Belgium did not fare too well once he had to face a tougher class of opponent.

Lokonga seriously struggled in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United before the September international break.

So, after failing to sign a midfielder during the summer, it is expected Arsenal will go back in for another DM at some point in the near future.

Romano confirmed that whilst Danilo was an option for Arsenal in the summer, it was never close to being a done deal.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz is of interest, but nothing has been decided yet:

“Danilo is one of the players that Arsenal have tracked during the summer but it was never close to being completed, Palmeiras wanted more than €35m for him,” Romano explained.

“Douglas Luiz remains in the list but nothing has been decided yet for January.”
