Match preview

The Eastern Conference leaders take on their Western Conference counterparts in a huge clash in California.

Last weekend, the Black and Gold left it late but did manage to beat Minnesota United 2-0 at home.

Ryan Hollingshead opened the scoring just eight minutes from time, before fellow substitute José Cifuentes secured the victory in stoppage time.

This means Los Angeles have now scored in 30 consecutive regular season home matches, the ninth time an MLS club has reached this mark.

For Steve Cherundolo’s side, they’ve now won three in a row and have 22 points on the board, from a possible 27.

Philadelphia meanwhile lead the way over in the east with 18 points to their name.

The Union were given the unenviable assignment of being the first visitors to brand-new Geodis Park last Sunday.

Mikael Uhre actually silenced Tennessee, breaking the deadlock 66 minutes in, before Nashville found a deserved equaliser, coming late on from the penalty spot.

Uhre’s first MLS goal was actually the first time Philly had scored or conceded after the hour mark this season.

In March and April, Jim Curtin’s men won five games on the bounce, a new club record, but have since failed to win any of their last three fixtures.

With form and home field advantage in their favour, LAFC will come into this one at Banc of California Stadium as favourites.
