New Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglu wants to make out-of-favour defender Harry Maguire his first signing in north London in a move that could cost the lilywhites as much as £40m, it has been reported.
The former Celtic boss was announced as Tottenham’s latest manager on Tuesday morning, and with the transfer season already well underway, has wasted no time warming to his new task.
There is plenty to do in north London, with as many as ten players potentially on their way out this summer and the future of talismanic figure Harry Kane still unclear amid interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.
One player who could be on their way in at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, is Harry Maguire. The Manchester United club captain has been starved of game time in the past season as he has fallen behind Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez and even on occasion Luke Shaw in Erik ten Hag’s pecking order.
Though it is yet to jeopardise his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, the Three Lions boss told the media that Maguire would need to find regular game time if he wanted to be sure of a spot in the squad for the European Championships next summer.
According to the Telegraph, that football could be found at Tottenham, with Kane thought to have personally recommended the defender to the board, with Maguire also wanted by Mauricio Pochettino during his time in charge of the Lilywhites.
Valued at around £40m, Maguire’s arrival would not be cheap, and there is as of yet no indication that Tottenham will follow up their interest, but it is certainly a move to watch between now and the transfer deadline in September.
