High-flying Aston Villa is on course to add a massive addition to the backroom staff at Villa Park this summer after reports detail the club closing in on a deal to bring renowned sporting director Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo to Birmingham.

Commonly known as Monchi, the 54-year-old has been widely regarded as one of the top sporting directors in Europe across a career at the boardroom level that has spanned over two decades, which included a wealth of success at La Liga side Sevilla that saw the club bank all seven of it’s Europa League triumphs as well as the UEFA Super Cup in 2006.
A small stint at AS Roma is included on his CV, and his penchant for scouting and aiding in the development of talent has produced a laundry list of players who reached the pinnacle of the European pyramid, including the likes of Diego Capel, Alberto Moreno, Jesús Navas, Antonio Puerta, Sergio Ramos, José Antonio Reyes, Adriano, Dani Alves, Júlio Baptista, Federico Fazio, Seydou Keita, and Ivan Rakitić.
One of the most connected directors across the globe, his arrival at Villa would constitute a massive boon to the project under former Sevilla colleague Unai Emery, with the pair being instrumental in many of Sevilla’s biggest moments on the European stage.
Emery’s arrival at Villa Park saw an immediate uptick in performance that culminated in the club climbing from 16th to finish 7th while securing Europa Conference League football in 2023-24, with Villa now ready to push further forward on the domestic and European fronts and needing to continue to improve their ability to recruit accurately.
With Monchi’s potential addition, the club could be set to rival the likes of Newcastle United and Brighton to push for places in the top six on a yearly basis moving forward.
