Brentford begin summer advances for Nottingham Forest starlet Brennan Johnson

The 22-year-old Forest academy graduate was a leading light for Steve Cooper as the club fought to avoid relegation in 2022-23, but such has been his development that the City Ground may be bereft of his presence in the near future

With success comes attention, and in the case of Nottingham Forest starlet Brennan Johnson, this very much holds true this summer after reports that Brentford has begun advances to possibly secure his signature this summer.

According to The Telegraph’s John Percy, Thomas Frank’s Bees have tabled a club-record £30m first offer for the 22-year-old Welsh international forward and are the first club to come to the table surrounding a player that is in high demand.

Johnson featured in all 38 Premier League matches for Forest under Steve Cooper as the club finally found solid ground during their return to the top flight of English football while avoiding dropping down to the Championship. Johnson’s eight goals, and qualities on the ball, played a vital role in that effort.

But for Brentford, a club that has done so well since their own promotion to the Premier League, there are serious questions moving into the 2023-24 campaign after it was judged that star man Ivan Toney was to receive an eight-month suspension due to betting practices that go against FA policy.

As such, the capital side is looking to secure vital reinforcements to the forward line to support Cameroonian Bryan Mbeumo. The opening offer for Johnson is, however, deemed to be a considerable distance away from the figure that Forest would hope to receive, with the club possibly seeking somewhere in the region of as much as £50m for the player.

Johnson is reportedly a priority target for Brentford after the club has been trailing the Welshman for 18 months according to Percy, but such is the interest in the player, that Forest could be in a strong position to hold out and review further offers from both Brentford and other clubs in order to receive a figure commensurate with their valuation.
