After almost a month without playing – following the postponements of games against Nottingham Forest and Manchester United – Leeds are back in action as they host Aston Villa at Elland Road.
Jesse Marsch’s side have used the time afforded to them by the period of royal mourning and the international break to rehabilitate several key players, with the likes of Patrick Bamford, Liam Cooper, Luke Ayling, Junior Firpo and Rodrigo all now fully fit and competing for a place in the starting XI.
The competition up front will be particularly interesting following Rodrigo’s flying start to the season, with Bamford previously the undisputed first choice up top and viewed as a key player at the club.
Leeds made a positive start under Marsch this campaign with wins over Chelsea and Wolves, but a chaotic defeat to Brentford on September 3 exposed some of the defensive frailties that linger in the squad, and Cooper’s return should offer a huge boost to the leadership and organisation at the back – with Diego Llorente likely to make way.
The visit of Villa will be one targeted by the Whites at the start of the season as one they should be winning if they aim to comfortably survive in the Premier League this season, and the form so far this season of Steven Gerrard’s side offers further encouragement.
The two sides faced each other in pre-season and it was Villa who came out on top in a narrow win, but with key players Lucas Digne, Matty Cash, Boubacar Kamara and Diego Carlos all out injured, Leeds should fancy themselves to get over the line.
