Match preview

Leeds have been an early-season surprise, beating Wolves and memorably Chelsea at Elland Road to put a dampener on relegation predictions, but a defeat to Brighton on Saturday provided a reality check to fans.

There will be more disappointments and inconsistencies throughout the season due to the turnover in the summer, but they will have targeted Everton at home as one of the must-wins – especially in a generous run of early season fixtures.

The Toffees are likely to be one of the main contenders for the drop and if Leeds can boost their points total to 10 after five games, they will be well assured of escaping the relegation fight that dogged them throughout last season.

Luis Sinisterra has made a positive impression in his brief appearances for the Whites so is likely to come into contention for a start – possibly at the expense of Dan James – but with Patrick Bamford’s fitness still up in the air there might not be too many changes after a narrow defeat to the Seagulls.

Everton were fortunate to escape with a point against Brentford and still don’t look capable of stringing a succession of results together.

Back-to-back draws against two sides thought to be their competitors this season puts them in need of a first win of the season as the pressure gradually starts to gather against Frank Lampard, and they face a tough ask travelling to Elland Road, which Jesse Marsch will be hoping to make into a fortress this season.
