David de Gea is closing in on a new deal at Old Trafford after the Spaniard agreed to lower his £375,000 per week wages, according to reports.

The Spanish shot-stopper had an option to add a further 12 months to his existing deal, but his name was missing when United announced they had activated that option in the contracts of teammates Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw and Fred, with the wage demands thought to be too high from the United no.1.

There were also concerns heading into the campaign that he would not be suitable for Erik ten Hag’s style of football, which requires a goalkeeper comfortable on the ball. In the early days of the Dutchman’s era at Old Trafford, it looked as though those fears had been realised.

However, De Gea has improved, and as per the Telegraph, talks are now well underway on a contract extension that will see the 32-year-old accept a pay cut to remain in the north west beyond 2023.

The Spaniard himself has been clear on his stance.

“I’m relaxed, for sure it’s going to end in a good way”, the shot-stopper told the Manchester Evening News.

Meanwhile, Jack Butland could join De Gea at Old Trafford in January, with the Crystal Palace backup set to replace Martin Dubravka in the United squad after Newcastle recalled the Slovakian shot-stopper.

A new deal for one of the Red Devils’ longest serving players could also cool links with the likes of Diogo Costa, Yann Sommer and Unai Simon, who had all reportedly previously been on Manchester United’s radar.
