Match preview

Once upon a time, Norwich were something of a bogey-side for Liverpool, particularly at Carrow Road. Between 1984 and 1994, the Reds travelled to Norwich ten times and yet only once managed to travel back to Liverpool with a victory.

The Premier League era began with the Canaries taking seven out of a possible 12 points off Liverpool during an era that included Norwich travelling to Munich and slaying Bayern in the UEFA Cup – becoming the first English side to win at the Olympic Stadium.

Since then, it has been almost one-way traffic in this fixture with Norwich winless in their last 16 matches against the Reds. The Jurgen Klopp era has been particularly brutal, suffering five straight defeats while conceding 16 goals in the process. This explains why the 4/11 odds of an over 2.5 goals match are so low for this match.

With fans back in the stadiums, fortress Anfield has firmly been re-established here with Klopp’s boys undefeated in 18 games in all competitions this season. Only a 0-0 draw with Arsenal in the EFL Cup Semi-Final 1st leg interrupts what would otherwise be a 12-game winning run which includes their last six Premier League Home games.

The Reds have also made short work of Norwich in their two encounters against them already this season, running out 0-3 winners on both occasions. With a Taki Minamino brace and goals for Divock Origi, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota all finding the net in those games, that leaves Sadio Mané as the only forward Liverpool started this season with yet to score against the Canaries.

Therefore, our tip to get on the scoresheet at any time during the match this Saturday is Sadio Mané at 5/6.

Liverpool team news

The Reds have a relatively clean bill of health at the moment. Although this has created new problems as good players like Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones were not included in their matchday squad for the trip to Burnley.

Diogo Jota’s withdrawal at half-time against Inter is the only injury worry coming into this one. Klopp confirmed in his press conference after the game that he twisted his ankle and it’s already swollen but further assessment is needed.

We also likely see some rotation here with just two days rest after their match in Milan on Wednesday evening. This means players like Minamino, Origi, Jones, Luis Díaz (above), Joel Matip, Naby Keïta, Konstantinos Tsimikas, Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain will all be hoping to benefit from any reshuffling of the pack.

Teemu Pukki

Norwich City team news

Tim Krul, Jakob Sorensen, and Andrew Omobamidele remain ruled out for the Canaries with shoulder, knee and back injuries respectively. Ozan Kabak also likely misses the game due to the illness that has sidelined him from the last two matchday squads.

Adam Idah is nearing a return though from the ankle and knee problems that kept him out of the squad that lost to Manchester City last weekend. Lukas Rupp is also back in training after feeling something in his hamstring before the Palace match. Although, it is likely this match will come a little too soon for him.

Dean Smith may also look to make some unforced changes to the side that was hammered 0-4 last weekend. Whatever the plan was to contain City clearly didn’t work and sticking with the same plan to face the league’s other elite attacking side might not be the best idea.
