Eddie Howe will meet with his former club for the first time since departing Bournemouth back in 2020 as Newcastle United play hosts to the Cherries this Saturday with nothing separating the two in the points tally after six games.

For all the talk of positivity surrounding Newcastle this season and for all their positive displays, in reality, they haven’t been that great. In fact, despite the elation in the North East, Howe sees his side level with his former employees, while sitting with just one win in the Premier League and just a three-point gap on the relegation zone.

The stats don’t tell the whole story, however, as the Magpies have looked promising at times this season. A 3-3 draw against the relentless Manchester City is a positive one, while they were brutally denied a point by a 98th-minute winner at Anfield from Fabio Carvalho. Further draws against the defensively-sound Wolverhampton Wanderers and the high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion give mixed reviews from what has been a topsy-turvy campaign so far.

As for Bournemouth, they bounced back from the sacking of Scott Parker in stunning style. The club went 2-0 down away to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, as Philip Billing’s excellent strike was met with a goal from Dominic Solanke and a winner from Jaidon Anthony.

The comeback win was also the second of the season for Bournemouth after defeating Aston Villa on the opening weekend of their Premier League return. This does mean one more win for the Cherries over Newcastle, but with four wins for the home side here, the Championship runners-up do come into the game with two more losses that include that record-equalling 9-0 loss at Anfield.
