Liverpool have reportedly submitted a ‘substantial’ opening offer for Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo have stated Liverpool have made their move in the race for his signature and are willing to offer the player a salary worth €5m (£4.3m) per season.

The report adds the financial aspect poses a ‘significant challenge’ for the Reds as they look to meet the demands of Veiga.

It is made clear Liverpool will have to meet the player’s €40m release clause to stand any chance of striking an agreement with Celta.

However, if Liverpool are able to get a deal for Veiga over the line for just £34.4m (his release clause in pounds), they will have made significant improvements to their midfield for a very low fee.

Alexis Mac Alister has already joined the Reds from Brighton this summer for just £35m and spending a total of around £70m on two quality, young midfielders in one window is excellent business from the Merseysiders.

Veiga scored 11 La Liga goals this past season despite his side struggling for form.
