One of the main stories of the 2022 summer transfer window was Frenkie de Jong being linked with Manchester United.
Erik ten Hag took the reins at Old Trafford last summer and was searching for a central midfielder capable of linking defence and attack.
The Dutchman enjoyed success at Ajax with De Jong a key figure in his side and with Barcelona looking to raise funds, a reunion with his former manager looked possible.
However, De Jong stayed put and United ended up bringing in Christian Eriksen.
Now, the former Ajax star has spoken out on his future once more:
“I always knew that I wanted to stay at Barcelona, that’s why it wasn’t so stressful for me last summer,” he said to Dutch outlet, Voetbal International.
Whilst De Jong seems happy in Spain, the fact he said he assumes he will still be at Barcelona next season suggests the decision is not entirely in his hands.
Barca are once again struggling for cash – hence why they were unable to sign Lionel Messi – and perhaps De Jong will be one of the players sold to help relieve the financial burden.
