Diego Carlos was linked with the Newcastle for much of the January window.

It was reported that Newcastle had seen €25m and €35m bids for Carlos rejected.

Further reports then suggested that Premier League outfit Tottenham were also in talks to sign the South American.

In the end, though, neither of Newcastle nor Tottenham signed Carlos, who is still currently plying his trade with Sevilla.

And now, it appears Newcastle, Spurs and any other potential suitors have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of the stopper ahead of the summer window.

As per Goal, Carlos committed to a new contract last year that ties him to Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium until 2025. Said contract also has an €80m release clause.

So why did it not get out? Well, Sevilla’s director of football Monchi explained why it was not announced publicly in 2021, stating:

“We’ve renewed [the contracts of] Diego Carlos and [Lucas] Ocampos 14 months ago,” Monchi told Mucho Deportes.

“We didn’t announce it for strategic reasons.”

Newcastle’s search for a centre-back continues

A bizarre situation that now seemingly leaves Newcastle needing to look elsewhere for a centre-back in the summer.

Sven Botman would also been linked with the Magpies in January, but Lille’s president appeared to put an end to Newcastle’s chances of signing the Dutchman last month when he stated Botman deserved to play in the Champions League:
