Chelsea have been handed a worrying injury blow in the first half of their clash with AC Milan as Wesley Fofana needed to be withdrawn after juts 36 minutes after visibly struggling for the previous ten minutes after a challenge with Rafael Leao.

Fofana joined the club in the summer in a mega £72m deal from Leicester City as part of the Blues’ overhaul of their backline which also included the arrivals of Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella.

And the Frenchman was enjoying a strong outing for his new club and had even grabbed his first goal in west London as he opened the scoring for the Blues, handing them a 1-0 lead from a corner.

Minutes later, however, he was down feeling his leg, the result of a foul from AC Milan winger Rafael Leao as Fofana was bringing the ball out of defence.

And though he gamely tried to continue, it was clear that he could not, with Trevoh Chalobah having to be sent on in the Frenchman’s stead.

At present, it is unclear how long he will be sidelined for, though he seems very likely to miss the Blues’ clash with managerless Wolves, and he could be a doubt for the return clash with AC Milan next Tuesday.
