Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich could be set for a summer of frustration at the Allianz Arena as the impending transfer window may present unexpected twists in the road to establishing Thomas Tuchel’s reign in Bavaria.
The German giants did well enough to save themselves from what would have otherwise been a cataclysmic season by their estimations when they secured their 11th consecutive league title on the final day of action during the 2022-23 season, but failure to go deeper in the Champions League, and their exit from the DFB-Pokal (both under Tuchel) will set the tone for 2023-23.
Thankfully for the club, the summer recruitment drive has already begun in earnest after securing Austrian international Konrad Laimer on a free transfer in the wake of his contract at RB Leipzig running down, with Bayern also primed to complete a deal for Portuguese left-back Raphäel Guerreiro next week in another move that will see a key asset arrive from rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Guerreiro’s arrival could call into question the future of one or two key members at Bayern, however. Recent reports have detailed stalled conversations surrounding a contract extension of Canadian star Alphonso Davies amid interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid. To add to that, Bayern may now have to contend with a possible summer departure of French defender Lucas Hernández.
Hernández has just one year left on his current deal with Bayern coming into the 2023-24 campaign, but Paris Saint-Germain is reportedly keen on the French international in the wake of uncertainty surrounding his status in the senior team after Tuchel’s arrival.
Should the player not feature prominently in the German’s plans, Bayern has been clear surrounding their position on the player and will look to sell him this summer rather than allow him to run down his deal and walk for nothing after the conclusion of the upcoming season, which would constitute a massive loss on a player that is, to date, their record purchase.
