Ronaldo made his long-awaited return to Manchester United in the summer of 2021.
He left Juventus for around £17m and, along with Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, was expected to turn United into a title-challenging side after their 2nd place finish the campaign prior.
However, that did not happen, with Manchester United instead finishing 6th in the Premier League and notching their lowest points total in the history of the Premier League.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, scored 18 in 30 PL matches for the Red Devils.
Before making the switch to Manchester United for a second time, though, it did appear to be Manchester City who were leading the race for CR7.
Manchester City were in the market for a striker but failed in their attempts to land Harry Kane. This seemingly led the Sky Blues to turn to Ronaldo, but United swooped and signed the ageing forward.
Discussing Ronaldo, Romano said: “As you’ll remember last summer, there were talks over a surprise move for Cristiano Ronaldo to join Manchester City.
“Still, it was never 100% approved by the board or by the technical staff at City. There were also some issues at Ronaldo’s end with his agent Jorge Mendes, so the deal collapsed, even though Juventus were happy to accept the move.
“In the end, United appeared on the scene and Ronaldo was happy to join them as soon as their interest became apparent.”
