Vital at club and international level, Son’s potential absence in the run up to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar could not come at a worse time for Tottenham or South Korea

Tottenham Hotspur FC and South Korea star Son Heung-min faces an injury scare after being removed during Spurs’ vital matchday six clash in the Champions League against French giants Olympique de Marseille at the Orange Velodrome.

The 30-year-old featured just 24-minutes in the south of France before being clattered by OM center-back Chancel Mbemba as both challenged for a header.

It took Son four minutes before he made his way down the tunnel before being replaced by Malian international midfielder Yves Bissouma which saw Tottenham revert away from their 3-4-1-2 and swap to a 3-5-2, which did Spurs no favors in regards to their performance in the first half.

Any considerable time away from the first-team under Antonio Conte would not only be a huge blow for Spurs as they look to remain in the thick of the top-four race in the Premier League, but South Korea’s chances at making waves at the 2022 World Cup Qatar in just three weeks would take a severe blow if he was to end up being unavailable for even a portion of the tournament.

Drawn in a deceptively tricky group alongside Portugal, Ghana, and Uruguay, it will be all hands on deck for South Korea if they are to, along with Japan, once again represent Asian football’s best chance for a run into the knockout stage of the competition, and the 35-goals for his country would be sorely missed.

As for Tottenham, he remains vital for the club despite scoring just three goals this season in the Premier League at the time of writing, and his absence would leave Antonio Conte with massive boots to fill, despite the existence of Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski in the senior set-up.
