Chelsea and Manchester United target Marcus Thuram will be available as a free agent this summer when his contract with Borussia Monchengladbach expires, the club have confirmed.

The French attacker, who was a first half substitute in the World Cup final in December, is in the final months of his contract with the Bundesliga outfit, and though they have been attempting to tie him down to a new deal, he has been unwilling to commit his future to the club.

And, as a result, Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has since confirmed that the Frenchman will depart on a free this summer.

“We’ve decided to allow Thuram to leave”, he revealed. “The fact he will leave on a free is not a positive situation. I can’t sugarcoat it.”

“We have to accept that there are bigger clubs he might move to.”

Thuram has been in fine form this season, with the 25-year-old having scored 11 times so far this campaign in 20 German top-flight outings. He was linked to Manchester United in January as the Red Devils sought out a low-cost striker option, though they eventually settled on Wout Weghorst.

Manchester United could also have something to say about that, with a free transfer seemingly too good an opportunity to pass up, and Thuram will certainly be on the wishlist of plenty of Europe’s elite clubs come the summer.
