Tottenham have been dealt a massive blow as it has been confirmed that midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury after hobbling off in their 4-1 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday.

The Uruguayan, who has been a revelation in the 12 months since his arrival in north London from Juventus, was forced off late in the game and there were serious concerns about his fitness, with the issue coming just 24 hours after the club had confirmed that fellow midfielder Yves Bissouma had undergone surgery for a fractured ankle.

A Tottenham official statement confirmed the news, which had been feared by many since he exited the clash on Saturday afternoon.

“We can confirm that Rodrigo Bentancur has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will be out of action for the remainder of the campaign”, they wrote.

“He will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation with our medical staff.”We’re all behind you, Rodrigo.”

It leaves Antonio Conte with a massive selection headache heading into their Champions League last 16 clash with AC Milan, with Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg suspended for the first leg at San Siro, leaving an inexperienced midfield duo of Pape Sarr and Oliver Skipp the most likely outcome for the Lilywhites.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris suffered a knee injury in the dying stages of Spurs’ 1-0 home win over Premier League champions Manchester City that will see him sidelined for between six to eight weeks, and leaves only backup goalkeeper Forster as a senior option among the Tottenham ranks.
