Manchester United kicked off their European campaign on Thursday and were expected to at least earn a point vs the Spanish outfit as they looked to continue their fine domestic form in Europe.

However, a much-changed Manchester United looked poor vs Sociedad and eventually lost the tie 1-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo had United’s best chance of the game in the first half. He was through on goal but was caught by two defenders.

Following that incident, Steve Nicol has blamed Ronaldo for the loss and suggested that age is catching up with him.

Speaking to ESPN about Ronaldo’s performance, Nicol said: “I’ll be honest, when you mention the game, the only thing I have in my head is Ronaldo clean through [on goal] and getting caught by two players.

“That’s kind of what springs to my mind. And he did have another look. He had a couple of other chances, not as good as that one, but there was just something missing.

“But that’s the only thing I can think of. The fact that Ronaldo was clean through and looked every one of those 36, 37 years.”

Manchester United have now lost three games this season, two of which saw Ronaldo starting for the Red Devils.
