Match preview

It’s Flag Day at Celtic Park with the hosts celebrating their latest title victory, looking to start the defence of that trophy with a win.

Ange Postecoglou’s team are unbeaten in 32 Premiership matches, winning 26 of them, form that saw the Hoops wrestle back the title from Rangers.

Given Scotland’s improved coefficient, as champions, Celtic go straight into the Champions League group phase without the need for any qualifiers.

Every Celt around the world has 25 August circled in their diaries, eagerly waiting to find out which big guns will be visiting Glasgow’s East End.

Before then, will the Bhoys get three points on the board in this Premiership opener?

Aberdeen meantime finished tenth last season, despite having finished between second and fourth in the previous eight campaigns.

Given this, Jim Goodwin has overseen wholesale changes and, so far, the positivity has returned.

The Dons won all four League Cup group matches, scoring 12 goals and conceding zero, most recently seeing off Raith Rovers last Sunday.

Nevertheless, this’ll be a far tougher assignment with Celtic, obviously, heavy favourites to win at Parkhead.

Celtic team news

Compared to last season, Celtic have been quiet in the transfer market, although that isn’t saying much.

Firstly, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota have made their loan moves permanent from Tottenham and Benfica.

Left-back Alexandro Bernabei is set to make his debut having arrived from Lanús.

Goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist and midfielder Aaron Mooy are likely to be on the bench.

At centre-back, with Carl Starlet out injured, Stephen Welsh is likely to deputise, chosen over new recruit Moritz Jenz.

In terms of outgoings, Tom Rogic, Nir Bitton, Vasilis Barkas, Ismaila Soro and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo have all left the club.

Georgios Giakoumakis won the Premiership’s golden boot last season, but could start the new campaign on the bench.

That’s simply due to the competition for places Kyōgo Furuhashi, possibly, getting the nod.

Daizen Maeda and Jota have been completing the front three in pre-season, but Liel Abada could come in.

Aberdeen team news

Liam Scales, who’s on loan from Celtic, is ineligible so won’t feature after impressing during the League Cup.

This is likely to lead to a reshuffle at centre-back with David Bates coming in alongside new captain Anthony Stewart.

In goal, Joe Lewis has made 267 appearances for the Dons but Kelle Roos has taken his number one jersey.

Other new signings including Ylber Ramadani and Bojan Miovski, both from MTK Budapest; the latter scored seven minutes into his debut last Sunday.

Lewis Ferguson and Calvin Ramsey are the high-profile departures, joining Bologna and Liverpool for around £8.5 million combined.
