In what is the club’s first outing in Italian top flight football, Monza are already desperate to rack up all three points in Serie A after a dismal start to the 2022/23 season has thrown them into last place in the league ahead of a meeting with Udinese at the Brianteo Stadium.
We’re two games into the latest Serie A season, and with it has come a rapid reality check for the newly-promoted side.
Monza started their season with the hosting of Torino, and two goals for the Turin side gave them a 2-0 lead, before Dany Mota netted with seconds to go in what was the club’s first-ever Serie A goal. On the other hand, with 55% of the ball that day and four shots on target from 15 efforts, Giovanni Stroppa’s men could hold their heads high in some regard in their Serie A debut.
Napoli were up next for the Serie B playoff winners, but a 4-0 demolition by the Naples outfit was a stark reminder in the step up in class from 40 years in Serie B to today’s game in the top flight.
Once again for Udinese, the start to the season has been torrid. They’ve not won a game to this point and despite the expectation to beat Monza, there is little hope for them this season in the long run. The club did manage to take the lead against champions AC Milan at the San Siro on the opening week of action, but a 4-2 loss in the end and a 0-0 draw with Salernitana a week later keeps them in poor form.
Andrea Sottil is desperate for a win now as his place at the helm is already under a great threat. However, this could be the game his men finally return to the win column.
