The Rome derby is one of three of the gargantuan games going down this weekend with Roma and Lazio set to clash at the Stadio Olimpico with just one point separating either side as Jose Mourinho’s men are in fourth and narrowly ahead in the table.
Maurizio Sarri and Mourinho have barely crossed paths in their long careers as managers, both spending time at Chelsea down the years too. Now, they meet in one of Europe’s most fierce derbies, and it comes around this season with the added pressure that a win is a must if they are to end up in the top four before the World Cup break at the end of next week’s games.
Roma are boasting eight wins so far in Serie, and only Napoli at the top of the table have won more. On the other hand, with just 16 goals scored, no side inside the top eight have netted fewer, as the likes of Tammy Abraham continue to struggle in front of goal, while Paulo Dybala is still out injured.
Lazio have let in just eight goals all season long in Serie A – only Juventus have conceded fewer. At the same time, however, Lazio lost in midweek to Feyenoord in the Europa League, meaning Sarri’s side ended up third in that group and won’t be in the knockout draw in February.
Given how only one point separates them in Serie A, it’s one of the toughest games to call with either side having plenty behind them to win the game. Either way, it’s set to be one almighty spectacle.
