Match Preview

The champions of Italy have gone and put down an early marker to regain their title already with a recent victory against city rivals Inter Milan that keeps them unbeaten in all competitions ahead of travelling to Genoa where a struggling Sampdoria awaits.

Milan, off the back of winning the title in stunning style last season, look like the team to beat once more in the midst of this crazy era in Italian football. The 19-time champions of Serie A are now third in the table and only trail Atalanta by two points after drawing with Sassuolo and the Bergamo outfit away from home.

It was the same old stars who sealed all three points in the recent Milan derby, with Oliver Giroud scoring another goal in the derby, as Rafael Leao scored twice in the game Further wins against Bologna and Udinese keep Milan unbeaten across the board, with Alexis Saelemaekers scoring an equaliser in the 1-1 draw against RB Salzburg in the midweek Champions League game.

Sampdoria, however, sit as one of the six winless sides in Serie A, but with them also losing three games and drawing just two, they sit inside the relegation zone and with only two points on the board.

Quite remarkably, however, both of these draws have come to teams that would have otherwise managed to beat them with relative ease, as Sampdoria drew 1-1 with Lazio and 0-0 with Juventus. On the other hand, with a stunning 4-0 loss to Salernitana in between these points, there is now more fear than ever that the club will fight relegation this year.

Milan will be confident in getting the job done here, and there could be some more changes to the side with the midweek Champions League game ending in a draw. The likes of Giroud may start again.
