The Dutch giants rebuffed United’s €90m (£76m) offer for the 22-year-old winger despite reports from The Sun earlier today suggesting that the Red Devils were gaining ground in their attempts to prize the São Paolo native to Old Trafford before the window slams shut in less than a week.
United boss Erik ten Hag, who worked with Antony for two seasons at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, has remained focused on trying to bring in another five players to the northwest of England in order to boost the quality on offer in the red half of Manchester, with a wide player among the desired reinforcements wanted by the Dutch tactician.
Antony too desires a move to the English giants and has been left frustrated by Ajax in their staunch resistance in allowing him to leave for anything less than the reported €100m that they value the Brazilian international at in the current market.
With the future of Cristiano Ronaldo remaining in the balance and causing Ten Hag to shift both Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford into central roles to cover for the fact that the club currently is not utilizing a true number 9, a wide player of Antony’s quality would certainly improve the club’s chances of fighting for a place in the top four.
That leaves just Jadon Sancho and Swedish youngster Anthony Elanga as the only wide players capable of being deployed and fully trusted even though the likes of Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho, Facundo Pellistri, and Tahith Chong are all listed in the first-team at current.
