France lost to Argentina on penalties, failing to defend their crown picked up in 2018.

Lionel Messi and Argentina won the shootout 4-2. Messi netted twice on the day and scored in the shootout. The 35-year-old has now won every major trophy available to him.

As for Kylian Mbappe, he scored a hat-trick in the final – becoming only the second player to ever do so.

He also won the 2022 Golden Boot and is expected to become the all-time leading goalscorer at WCs in the near future.

Argentina dominated the tie for large periods and France were only able to get back into the game thanks to some poor decision-making from Argentina’s defenders that saw them give two penalties away.

Despite this, nearly 200,000 disgruntled fans have signed a petition demanding FIFA to replay the World Cup final between France and Argentina.

“Sign and share en masse for the match to be replayed!”

Said user obviously did not watch France’s quarter-final clash with England when Bukayo Saka was fouled in the build-up to Les Bleus’ first goal and when Harry Kane should have had a penalty in the first half.
