Harry Kane’s potential move to Real Madrid is now ‘irretrievably’ off after Los Blancos were warned that it would cost them over £100m to sign the Englishman this summer, according to reports in Spain.
Karim Benzema’s shock departure from Real Madrid last week has left the club without a striker among their ranks, with even backup option Mariano Diaz leaving the club this summer too following his contract expiring.
It had emerged that Los Blancos had set their eyes on Kane as his potential replacement, with England’s captain Carlo Ancelotti’s no.1 choice for the role. With Spurs keen not to sell to a Premier League rival, and Kane down to the final year of his contract in north London, it felt as though it could be a perfect move for all parties.
However, any move is now off and, according to Spanish outlet Diario AS, will not be revisited this summer due to the fee that Tottenham are set to demand for their talisman.
According to the report, Kane is an ‘impossible economic fit’, with Tottenham holding out for £100m+ for their record goalscorer, who hit 30 goals in the Premier League in the most recent season.
They add that ‘there is no way to amortize a player of almost 30 years whose transfer price can rise to more than €115M’, especially having already spent over 100m euros on his compatriot Jude Bellingham this summer, a decade Kane’s junior.
For Kane, it is another chance to join a competitive side missed, and should he remain at Tottenham this summer as seems likely, a world class striker will have to make do without any European football next season.
