This time FC Barcelona are reportedly threatening the midfielder with legal action.

According to The Athletic, Barcelona have told Frenkie de Jong they want to annul his existing contract and return to the deal he was on before.

The reason for this is Barca allege the terms given to him by the club’s previous board involved criminality and provide grounds for legal action against those involved.

Barcelona are said to have wrote to De Jong on July 15 claiming to have found evidence of criminal actions on behalf of the parties who signed his renewal on October 20, 2020.

Sources around the Catalan club suggest there has been further dialogue between Barcelona and De Jong’s camp, in which the present board have identified their predecessors for the alleged criminality and warned that De Jong and his representatives may also be implicated:

It is added Barcelona are trying to improve their financial issues by selling De Jong or getting the midfielder to reach an agreement to defer wages he is owed.

What has Xavi said about De Jong?

Speaking after FC Barcelona’s latest pre-season friendly, Xavi Hernandez had this to say on De Jong: “I don’t know what will happen to Frenkie de Jong. Until August 31st anything can happen…

“He knows what I think and what the club want and need. Of course I’m counting on him, he’s a great player.”

Manchester United & De Jong

The aforementioned report from The Athletic states that Manchester United had a bid for De Jong accepted, but issues with the player — the outstanding money owed and whether he wants a move to United — remained unresolved.
