New Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has revealed that he did attempt to lure Erling Haaland to the Emirates Stadium this summer, but that his friend laughed off any idea of making the move to north London before signing for Manchester City.

Odegaard and Haaland are firm friends, with the pair playing together for the Norweigian national side, and there was plenty of hope, mostly jokily, among the Arsenal fanbase that this relationship could see Haaland end up in north London this summer, with the Gunners in the market for a striker.

Unsurprisingly to most, this move didn’t transpire, with Haaland moving to Premier League champions Manchester City instead,

But, Odegaard recently admitted, the Arsenal skipper did try to sway him into a move to The Emirates Stadium instead.

“Yeah, I tried,” the 23-year-old told F365. “When the Arsenal fans were posting pictures of me and him in the (Arsenal) shift, I was sending them to him. I was always working, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.”

When asked if Haaland responded to his messages, he revealed that the striker saw the funny side of it all. “He was just laughing. He’s a funny guy so he was just laughing”, he added.

Close relationship continues

“Yeah, we speak almost every day. We have a group on Snapchat with some of the guys from the (Norway) team, so we speak a lot.”

“He’s a great guy, a great player. I think it will be, unfortunately for us, a great signing for them. For sure he will score some goals.”

“I wish him all the best except for when we play them. It will be fun to see him in England.”
