Former Liverpool shot-stopper Loris Karius is set for a return to the Premier League as he nears a move to Newcastle United on a free transfer.

The German goalkeeper was out of contract at Anfield in the summer, with a loan move to Union Berlin not having turned into a permanent one, and the 29-year-old failed to find a new club over the summer.

However, Newcastle United are now in the market for a shot-stopper, with Karl Darlow having suffered a knee injury set to leave him on the sidelines for a sustained period of time.

Beyond Nick Pope, it leaves the Magpies with just Mark Gillespie as a potential backup, meaning that Eddie Howe’s side need an alternative, leading them to Karius.

The former Liverpool man is set to sign a short-term contract with the Tyneside outfit, that will at the very least tide them over until the January transfer window.

Karius has experience as a Premier League shot-stopper, having made 29 appearances in the top flight during his time with the Reds, and while his career has been majorly overshadowed by his errors in the 2019 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, his resume prior to that was solid.
